Hand-loomed carpet is made by skilled artisans who manually weave the left-to-right strands of yarn in and out of the up-and-down strands.

The weaver can create textures, patterns and surfaces not possible with machines.

These shots give you a suggestion of the surface qualities of hand-loomed rugs.

In reality they are a textural experience and need to be felt to be fully appreciated.

Hand-loomed carpets are very popular now

They allow designers to add pizzazz to a room without the expense of hand-knotted rugs.

The examples below are from the Kravet X Stanton project which we wrote about last month.

We will show you how you can inspect this collection (and others) in photos of a room you are designing or in photos of rooms supplied by Stanton, like the one below.

How to See the Entire Collection

This is just a small sample of the versatility of hand looms.

Most of the carpets in this collection are hand-loomed, but several are not. For example, the Albert Cobalt and Allegra Cobalt are Wilton Woven. Be on the lookout.

You can see many, many more by going to this link.

What Else You Need to Know

Whereas hand-loomed rugs are beautiful and versatile, there are performance issues that you must be aware of.

Because of their construction, hand looms are very difficult and in some cases impossible to seam. That's why the bolts are 16 feet wide, hopefully to avoid the need to seam. Most bolts are 15 feet wide.

Any cut along the side edges can be disastrous because of the high possibility of irreparable fraying.

In fact, most all of hand-loomed carpets are formatted into rugs.

Likewise, animal claws and toys may be able to snag bulky, loosely woven  yarn and pull it loose. This damage would also be irreparable.

If you have any concerns about the kind of traffic your project will experience, discuss the risks with us.
