The day has come.
Addison/Dicus & Bailey has arrived with your client's new rug. We've unrolled it and are waiting to replace the furniture.
Uh, exactly how do you want us to do this?
Mike Bailey, who has participated in thousands of rug showings and deliveries, said, "When this beautiful, hand-made visually dominating object debuts in a room, confusion often arises. Like, how do we arrange the furniture?"
There are no hard and fast rules about arranging furniture on an area rug. But there are principles that can make the task much easier.
Size Matters

Get the right-sized rug.
The rug should be a uniter. If it's too small, it's going to chop up the room and make the furniture seem like random afterthought. If it's too big, it will swallow the furniture and dominate the space, not unite it.

What to do?
Unless you have a custom rug made for the room and you and your client don't mind waiting as long as a year for it to be weaved and delivered, you need to pick out a standard size. These are available in great abundance in our showrooms.
For example for the placement that you have in mind, does it require an 8x10 or a 9x12?
Get a couple of tape measures and find out. Test both of these sizes in the space.
You are going to learn a lot using your imagination.
Will the 9x12 swallow up the room?
Avoid extra footage. It's expensive, unnecessary and ultimately counter-productive.
Will the 8x10 force furniture off the rug completely and create a frat house lounge look?
Think proportionately. The rug needs to fit the size of the room.
There's More
Finally, keep in mind that standard sizes in handmade rugs are rarely standard. Countless factors contribute to the final size of a rug during its design and months of construction. Even when you do the right thing and measure, don't be disappointed if the size is not exact.
We Want You To Get It Right
And don't despair! Even if the size we deliver is wrong, you will have the opportunity to correct the mistake.
Rug showings are part of the service at Addison/Dicus and Bailey. If what worked in the showroom does not work on the floor, we will roll it up and bring it back. Your client may be temporarily disappointed, but we are all much better served by getting it right for the long term.
