Fabricating a Rug - Step by Step

Fabricated rug: Various pieces of broadloom carpet are cut and reassembled to make a new, one-of-a kind customized rug.

People want a special look. Individuals want to reflect something of their personality. Corporations want to brand their image or their mission.

Mandy Vallowe is opening her new interior design office on Kennedy. She wants a special and unique look.

Using pictures and drawings, she described the custom rug she envisioned to Bob Ford at Addison/Dicus & Bailey. Bob's 42 years laying carpet for Tampa's designers has made him a premier carpet fabricator. We've shown off his work before, here, here and here.

Fabricating a Custom Rug

Bob started with a scale drawing.

From the drawing, he cut the pieces of the new rug.

He assembled the pieces from the backside of the rug and glued them together. This stage is called back seaming.

Cutting patterns developed from scale drawing.

When he attached all the pieces, he flipped the rug for a final trim. Here Bob is "carving" the rug. This process sharpens the edges of the fibers where two colors join together, creating a clean line.

We took this shot shortly after delivering the rug. It is a dramatic statement. In places where the white carpet meets the white glass floor, it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Rug and floor were made for each other.

Because of the unpredictable effect on deliveries caused by C19, we are calling for all orders to be delivered by the Holidays to be in by Oct. 31. After that we can make no promises.
