How Not to Crash Carpet Installation Day

We install carpet just about every day of the week. It's quiet rewarding to change the look of a floor and see the happy faces of the designer and her customer.

It's a joy for us.

But two things can turn a day of happiness into misery, confusion and recrimination.

Hi tech sleep number bed.

We can't take it apart and put it back together again.

Disaster #1

Picture us unloading a truck full of our tools and new carpet in front of a customer's house. Chris the installation manager goes to the door and rings. And rings. And rings.

Frantic phone calls begin. No body's home. Where is the designer? Where is the customer?

This is going to be a bad day.

Disaster #2

When we measure an installation and about a week prior to installation, we notify the designer that certain items must be moved out of the room in order to lay carpet.

Fancy pool table

Call pool table moving pros for this.

Why? Because it's impossible for us to do the moving?

These items include large, heavy items like grand pianos, large aquariums, pool tables,

real and artificial large plants, large bookcases, and heavy exercise equipment.

Low clothes rack

We have found there are far fewer problems when the homeowner moves the clothes.

Also artwork that is within two feet of the floor. For example large paintings and free-standing sculpture.

Low hanging clothes and shoe racks on closet floors must be moved.

Large aquarium

It's far less risky for the homeowner to move aquariums.

Also homeowners must dismantle and move complicated electronics like sleep number beds and home theaters.

Here are some more details on items the homeowner must move.

Other Tips for a Smooth Installation Day

We will specify what items the customer must remove when we measure the job and note it in writing when we give you, the designer, the estimate. We also remind you again a week prior to installation.

Showcase for dining room

Needs to be moved by the homeowner.

We send you all the installation documents via email. To avoid mistakes, read the documents on your computer, not your cell phone.

Make sure that you or another decision maker is there to let us in and answer questions.

A Bad Day

The consequences of not doing the prep work can make a bad day for us all.

If we arrive and there is a large pool table in the middle of the room, we probably will have no choice but to leave. We probably won’t be able to reschedule for six weeks or more.

We all lose.

A Great Day!

Carpet installation means that your project is getting close to the finish line. It brings a welcome wave of excitement and optimism.

Where for a long time you might have seen paint buckets and construction equipment on the floor, there is now color and texture, the foundation of your design. Exciting things are ahead.

We all love it. Let's make sure it goes down as smoothly as possible.
